Employee Assistance Program
Employers should consider offering or expanding Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) to help identify and support employees with potential alcohol or other drug problems. EAPs are an excellent benefit to employees and their families and help show an employer's commitment to its workforce. EAPs offer an alternative to dismissal, contributing to retention and long-term savings. In addition to counseling and referrals, many EAPs offer other related services, such as supervisor training and employee education. Parts of an effective recovery-oriented EAP include:
- Confidential screening and counseling
- Worksite awareness programs
- Web-based information and referrals to treatment
- Recovery support for workers in treatment
- Follow-up programs to support workers in recovery
- Supervisor training to spot productivity problems and address problems with workers
